Blending the colours of hair extensions – a natural 3D effect | GrzechHair

Mixing the colours of hair extensions – how to achieve a natural 3D effect?

Perfect hair extensions are not just about choosing the right length and application method. Matching the colour of the hair extensions to your natural hair is also of the utmost importance. Sometimes a single shade isn’t enough to achieve a seamless transition. This is precisely when blending the colours of your hair extensions really comes into its own.

Combining two or more carefully selected shades allows you to create a multi-dimensional, natural 3D effect. This ensures that the extensions blend in much better with your hairstyle, particularly if your natural hair has highlights, lowlights, balayage or several intermingling tones.

GrzechHair offers a wide range of NN+ natural hair, available in many colours and using various extension methods.

Why is it worth mixing the colours of hair extensions?

Natural hair very rarely has a perfectly uniform colour. Even with uniform colouring, subtle differences can be seen between the shade at the roots, along the length and at the ends.

That is why, when professionally selecting hair for extensions, it is worth looking not only at one dominant colour, but also at the undertones, highlights and colour transitions within it.

Mixing two colours of hair extensions allows for a more natural transition between your own hair and the extensions, a multi-dimensional colour effect, subtle highlights without the need for additional colouring, and a 3D effect.

A combination of colours 7.7 and Alaska – an example of the 3D effect

In the makeover shown here, we used a combination of two colours from our hair extension palette: 7.7 and Alaska.

Combining these shades allowed us to match the extensions to the model’s multi-tonal blonde hair and achieve a more dimensional effect than would be possible using just one colour.

Lighter and darker strands blend naturally into the hairstyle, ensuring the result doesn’t look flat. It is precisely these details that form the basis of a natural-looking hair extension effect.

A 3D effect or a single colour?

It isn’t always necessary to mix several shades. If your natural hair has a very uniform colour, a carefully chosen single colour can produce a great result.

However, with hair featuring highlights, balayage, sombre, ombre or natural multi-tonal colour, combining two colours often allows for a much better match.

It is worth remembering that when choosing the colour of hair extensions, you should focus primarily on the colour along the length and at the ends of the hair, rather than just the shade at the roots. We apply a similar principle when selecting Clip-In hair extensions.

How should you mix hair colours for extensions?

There is no single universal ratio that suits everyone. It all depends on your natural hair colour and the effect you wish to achieve.

You can use a similar number of strands of each colour, or use one shade as the dominant colour and the other merely as a subtle highlight. When the strands are positioned correctly, the colours blend together during application, creating a cohesive and natural-looking hairstyle.

Mixing colours with the Tape-In ‘sandwich’ method

A very interesting effect can be achieved when applying hair extensions using the Tape-In method. By combining ‘sandwiches’ in different shades, the stylist can create a multi-dimensional colour without the need for additional hair colouring.

For this type of styling, you can use NN+ Tape On Duo natural hair extensions designed for the sandwich method. They are available in a wide colour palette ranging from blondes and browns to ombre and multi-tonal shades.

Mixing colours with the keratin method

Combining different shades also works brilliantly with keratin hair extensions. Individual strands can be positioned so that the colours intertwine along the entire length of the hairstyle.

With this method, it’s worth taking a look at the NN+ Mini BondesG keratin hair extensions, which allow for precise placement of individual shades.

Mixing colours with Clip-In hair

A 3D effect can also be achieved without permanent extensions. Natural Clip-In hair is attached using clips, allowing you to quickly change the length, volume and colour of your hairstyle.

If a single shade does not exactly match your natural hair, you can use different coloured strands or select a set that creates a multi-tonal effect once applied. Take a look at NN+ Clip-In SkinG natural hair.

Precise colour matching matters

At GrzechHair, we pay particular attention to matching the hair extensions to your natural hair colour. Sometimes a single colour gives the best result, whilst at other times it is only a blend of two or more shades that creates the perfect match.

The combination of colours 7.7 and Alaska demonstrates how, by pairing the right strands, you can achieve a natural, multi-dimensional blonde and a 3D effect.

If you’re looking for hair extensions that look natural, it’s worth experimenting not only with length or application method, but also with combining the colours of your hair extensions.
