How do you choose the right colour for hair extensions?

When selecting hair extensions, do not base your choice solely on the colour at the roots.

Natural hair can have a different undertone at the scalp, a different one along the length, and yet another at the ends. In many cases, it is precisely the colour of the mid-lengths and ends that is the most important reference point for extensions.

1. Choose the colour in daylight

If possible, carry out a colour consultation in natural light.

Artificial, warm or very cold lighting can alter the way we perceive blondes, browns and multi-tonal shades.

2. Hold the colour chart up to the length of the hair

Do not judge the colour from a distance.

Hold a specific strand from the palette directly against the client’s hair and compare it in several places.

3. Compare several similar shades

If two or three colours look similar, check them all.

A slight difference in undertone or brightness level may be barely noticeable on the colour strip when viewed on its own, but very distinct when held up against natural hair.

4. Pay attention to the undertone

It’s not just a question of whether the hair is light or dark.

It also matters whether the colour is:

• cool,
• warm,
• neutral,
• uniform,
• multi-tonal.

5. Don’t be afraid to mix colours

Natural hair very often does not have a single, perfectly uniform shade.

In such cases, a good result can be achieved by skilfully combining two similar colours of hair extensions.
